Cedar Rapids Community Schools

The 53rd Student-Built House Event

Blueprint design of the 2026 Student Build House exterior

The finishing touches are done, the tools are packed away, and it’s time to show off the hard work of our talented students! Join the Cedar Rapids Community School District for an exclusive look at the 53rd home constructed by our Student Built House program on May 13th.

This year’s house has a unique story! A local homeowner reached out directly to teacher Mr. Daniel Lough, asking if students could build on their private lot using their own architectural plans. Juniors and seniors from Jefferson, Kennedy, and Washington High Schools have spent their school days on the job site, working hand in hand with local trade experts to build this beautiful ranch-style home from the ground up.

Because this home was custom-built for a specific owner, it is not for sale. While the sale process looks different this time around, the heart of the program remains the same: providing our students with invaluable, real-world construction experience. We are incredibly proud of the craftsmanship they’ve displayed on this custom project and can’t wait for you to see it.

Come walk through the home to see our students' hard work firsthand, and help us celebrate their successful year at a community open house.
