Cedar Rapids Community Schools

New Principal for Wright Elementary School

Headshot of Kayla Nelson, a women with long brown hair wearing a tan shirt and black blazer.

Pending Board approval, Kayla Johnson (formerly Nelson) has been selected as the new principal of Wright Elementary School. Kayla fills the vacancy created by Jessica Auliff’s recent transition to the principal position at Grant Elementary.

To support our district’s needs during this transitional year, Kayla will serve in a dual-leadership role, serving as principal for both Wright Elementary and Nixon Elementary, splitting her time between the two schools. Please rest assured that our district team and Kayla are working closely together to establish clear schedules and on-site support at Wright so that our students, staff, and families have continuous, seamless leadership every single day.

Kayla is a passionate, experienced educator who is entering her 12th year in education—all dedicated to serving students and families right here in the Cedar Rapids Community School District. She spent nine years at Washington High School as a special education teacher and facilitator, and for the past two years, she has served as the principal at Nixon Elementary.  She holds a Master’s Degree in PK-12 Principalship and a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with endorsements in K-12 Instructional Strategist II (BD/LD) and 5-12 Instructional Strategist I (Mild/Moderate).

“We are excited to have Kayla expand her leadership role within our district this year. Throughout her time at CRCSD, she has shown a deep commitment to student success and community building. We are confident in her ability to foster strong relationships across both the Wright and Nixon communities while ensuring seamless support for all of our students, staff, and families,” commented Dr. Tawana Lannin, Superintendent

Kayla is thrilled to join the Wright community and build strong relationships with your children and families:

“I am truly honored to step into this role to support both the Wright and Nixon Elementary community this school year. While this is a year of transition, it is also a wonderful opportunity for growth and connection. I am committed to building strong relationships and ensuring that every student, family, and staff member feels welcomed, valued, and supported,” shared Kayla. “I look forward to meeting the Wright community and partnering with you to make this a fantastic school year!”

On a personal note, Kayla was married just this past weekend! When she isn't at school, she loves spending time with her new husband and daughter, reading, catching up with friends, and playing with her two dogs, Cooper and Lucy.

We are excited for the bright year ahead at Wright Elementary! Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Principal Kayla Johnson as she joins the Wright family.
