CRCSD Announces 2027–2028 Principal Assignments

Every administrator affected by the placement changes will continue serving CRCSD students and school communities

The Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRCSD) today announced its finalized principal assignments for the 2027–2028 school year as part of the district’s long-range reconfiguration planning. The assignments represent an important milestone in advancing CRCSD’s strategic plan, including school redesign, the transition to an intermediate-school model, and the establishment of strong, cohesive feeder patterns across the district.

“Our administrators play a critical role in the success of our students and school communities,” said Superintendent Dr. Tawana Lannin. “This thoughtful process took place over several months and considered the needs of each school, the strengths and aspirations of our leaders, and continuity for students, employees, and families. We are fortunate that every administrator affected by these placement changes will continue serving CRCSD. That continuity allows us to honor the relationships, traditions, and accomplishments of our school communities while preparing intentionally for redesign and advancing our vision of Every Learner Future Ready.”

The Executive Leadership Team began planning in May for a collaborative transition process that would honor the strengths, career aspirations, and building preferences of current leaders while aligning their experience with the unique needs of each school community. 

CRCSD currently has 43 building-level principal and associate principal positions. Under the reconfigured structure, the district will have 42 building-level administrative positions. Across the plan, six assignments involve a change in school, and seven involve a change in administrative role, with some overlap between the two categories. Most CRCSD schools will continue under their current building leadership, and every administrator affected by the placement changes will remain with the district.

“Announcing these assignments well in advance provides principals and school communities with time to build relationships, plan collaboratively, and prepare for a thoughtful and well-supported transition,” Dr. Lannin added. “Throughout the 2026–2027 school year, CRCSD will continue honoring the history, relationships, and traditions of affected school communities while working deliberately to prepare students, employees, and families for the district’s redesigned structure. We look forward to continuing the broader redesign process in collaboration with our staff and families.”

The announced assignments will take effect at the beginning of the 2027–2028 school year. This announcement does not change any building-level administrative assignments for the current school year; previously announced arrangements remain in effect.
