Announcing New Director of Strategic Communications

We are pleased to announce that Tara Thomas Gettman has been selected as the new Director of Strategic Communications for the Cedar Rapids Community School District, pending Board approval.

Tara is a familiar face among Eastern Iowa communications leaders, bringing more than two decades of experience across journalism, public relations, and strategic communications. Most recently, she served as the Director of Strategic Communications for the City of Waterloo and the Director of School and Community Relations for Waterloo Community Schools. In those positions, she successfully led strategic storytelling, media relations, community engagement, and crisis communications, always working to strengthen trust between the organizations and the communities they served.

“Tara’s deep roots in Eastern Iowa and her extensive background in school and municipal communications make her the perfect fit for this critical role,” said Superintendent Dr. Tawana Lannin. “She has a proven track record of using transparent communication to engage communities, build trust, and champion public education. We are excited to welcome her to the team as we continue our work to ensure every learner is future-ready.”

Before transitioning into public relations, Tara spent many years as an award-winning television journalist at KWWL in Waterloo and in the Pacific Northwest, and has also contributed as a freelance writer for The Gazette. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism (with a minor in Political Science) from Boston University and a Master’s degree in Strategic Communication from the University of Iowa. She is passionate about using authentic, transparent communication to celebrate student success, support our staff, and deepen connections among our schools, families, and the broader community.
